Our Story . . .
We started making and selling Squire Mountain Tub Cheese in 1996. We began in our home kitchen in Fryeburg, Maine; then we located our production facility to Gorham, Maine; and have just again re-located our production to Standish, Maine. This move provides us with our own 2,100 square foot building for production, storage and as our point of distribution.
Paul and Deanna Meserve developed their Squire Mountain Tub Cheese product about thirty years ago. One night as Paul was putting a cheese spread on crackers they all broke, he said to Deanna: “there has to be a better way than this”. That comment resulted in Deanna and Paul deciding to develop a “better product”. As you now know that product became Squire Mountain Tub Cheese. The term “tub cheese” comes from the historical way in which cheese was once fashioned in wooden tubs for the purpose of aging cheese.

Our Brand Name, Squire Mountain, found its place through the creative minds of Deanna and Paul. The “Mountain" aspect reflected the atmosphere that the Meserves inhabited and the place where the product was first produced for mass distribution. “squire” was Paul’s quirky addition of “being the squire of the mountain” or from another interpretation, “the gentleman of the mountain”. As our label states: “Started in Fryeburg, Maine, in 1996”…many happy customers continue to refer to Squire Mountain Tub Cheese as “Our Fryeburg Cheese”.
Paul did the actual distribution of Squire Mountain Tub Cheese in a 1988-used Ford pick-up. Sales took off immediately, once retailers and other supermarket officials tasted our Squire Mountain Cheddar Tub Cheese they usually agreed to stock our product. The direct store delivery continues today to many supermarkets, farm stands, etc. However, several years ago, after delivering directly to 44 Hannaford Supermarkets; the Hannaford buyer called us to deliver directly into their South Portland, Maine, warehouse in order to be able to sell Squire Mountain Tub Cheese in all of their supermarkets. As we continue to grow we have plans to add delivery to other warehouse accounts, so more Consumers throughout New England can purchase our products.
As we have grown, it involved the addition of UPC (Universal Product Codes) labels on our products; which allow supermarkets to scan our bar codes.

We received our Registered Trademark for “Squire Mountain” in 2000. We are Maine state inspected and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) inspected.
We began with our Original Cheddar Tub Cheese and have since introduced four additional products, which are currently available in our direct store delivery accounts (hopefully, we will now be able to introduce all of our products to more stores). We continue to expand our product offerings. In October 2009, we introduced Squire Mountain Original Cheddar Garlic & Herb Tub Cheese. This product promises to become another favorite with our Customers.
Recently, we made a change to a “new logo”, which was designed by our daughter, Christina. She has also designed and developed our web site; which now provides information about our products, where our product can be purchased, suggested uses of our products and the ability of Consumers to contact us by e-mail.
